The RNI memories of Michael Downing for February 1973

The International service Top 30 from 20.00 to 22.00 on Friday 9 February 1973 was presented by Mark Slate. Since he had arrived on the Mebo 2 in December 1972, Mark had become the usual host for the Top 30 show when Mike Ross was on shore leave, but would present it for the final time on 9 February 1973, as he was on the point of leaving RNI, to be replaced the following week by Steve King, who had an even shorter stay on RNI, lasting for only one tour of duty. The International Top 30 in 1973 was fairly closely based on the official British chart, but there was usually room for a few tracks that weren’t UK hits. The highest placed of these on 9 February 1973 was “Dreidel” by Don McLean at no. 10, which was a hit in Holland but not in the UK, and there was also “Zimmerman Blues” by Ralph McTell at no.24. This was a favourite track of the English speaking offshore stations at the time, being played a lot on Radio Caroline and featuring in their Big 3, which was as close as the English service of Radio Caroline got to a chart at the beginning of 1973.

Mark Slate was one of a number of DJs introduced to RNI by Don Allen, who was programme controller of the International service at the time and who had worked with Mark on Radio Caroline North. Mark only stayed with RNI for two months.

On the Dutch service, there were no changes in February 1973. The breakfast programme, Buitengaats, was presented on alternate weeks by Marc van Amstel and Gerard Smit and then Peter Holland, Tony Berk and Ferry Maat followed on weekdays until Driemaster at 16.00 with Leo van der Goot and Alfred Lagarde on alternate weeks. The Dutch service was completed by Nico Steenbergen from 18.00 to 20.00. Apart from Don Allen, Mike Ross and Mark Slate, the International service team at the beginning of February 1973 included Brian McKenzie and Arnold Layne.

The Super Hit 50 on Saturday 10 February 1973 was presented, as usual, by Ferry Maat. The Dutch service playlist for the week commencing 10 February 1973 included records by two Dutch acts that would eventually have hits, but not for a couple of years – Husky and John Russell. I remember the John Russell record, “You can always get another wife”, well, but have completely forgotten “Nitemare” by Husky.
