Op nummer 29 verwelkomen we Neil Diamond deze week als hoogste nieuwe met I am ... I Said.

The RNI memories of Michael Downing for the week leading up to

one of the most notorious days in RNI's history

Saturday 8 May 1971

After yesterday evening's transmitter maintenance, RNI is back on the air at 6.10 on 220 metres, but went off at 6.20, came back on at 6.35, but went off again at 6.45, came back for one minute at 7.00, but then went off again and finally returned at 7.15, although the shortwave transmitter remained off the air. The medium wave signal was very poor throughout the day, so medium wave and shortwave transmissions (shortwave having returned to the air during the day) close down at 16.21, with Stevi Merike saying that he hopes that they will return "soon" and "much stronger" later in the evening. But they didn't. Instead the first of the oldies shows is only on FM.

Sunday 9 May 1971

The station is back on the air as usual this morning, much stronger than yesterday, but only marginally stronger than before that.

International service programmes are:

15.00 Mike Ross (Super Hit 50)

 18.00 Alan West

 20.00 Crispian St John

 22.00 Tony Allan

 24.00 - 3.00 Mike Ross

News is read by Crispian St John, Stevi Merike and Mike Ross. Alan West has an hour of LP tracks between 19.00 and 20.00, to become a regular feature on Sunday evenings. Also Tony Allan intends to give a run down of the new Super Hit 50 at 22.30 on Sunday evenings.

Ex-RNI news....Andy Archer is now with Radio Jackie and presented an oldies show between 13.05 and 14.05 this afternoon.

Monday 10 May 1971

The medium wave signal is considerably better today than it has been recently, but they are still trying to improve it by going off the air at midnight for transmitter adjustments.

Programmes this evening are:

 16.00 Stevi Merike

 18.00 Alan West

 20.00 Crispian St John

 22.00 - 24.00 Stevi Merike

Alan West interviews Tony Ashton at 18.30. Stevi Merike sits in on the Tony Allan show for some reason, although why Tony is unable to present the show himself is not revealed.

Tuesday 11 May 1971

Reception is better again today, but they are hoping to get it better still as the days progress. Stevi Merike said that he will play more by the Radha Krishna Temple when he moves to a different time slot, but didn't say either when or which time slot he would be moving to.

Programmes today are:

 16.00 Stevi Merike

 18.00 Alan West

 20.00 Crispian St John

 22.00 Tony Allan

 24.00 - 3.00 Mike Ross

Newsreaders are Crispian St John and Mike Ross.

Wednesday 12 May 1971

Alan West interviews members of Arrival at 18.30 today. News is read today by Tony Allan and Mike Ross. The programme schedule is the same as yesterday and reception continues to improve.

Thursday 13 May 1971

Mike Ross, Stevi Merike and Tony Allan all go off on shore leave and Dave Rogers returns. The full programme schedule is now:

 6.00 Peter Holland

 6.30 Johan Maasbach

 7.00 Peter Holland

 10.00 Jan Van Veen

 12.00 Joost de Draaier

 16.00 Crispian St John
