The RNI memories of Michael Downing for this week

Saturday 10 April 1971

Plans for this Easter weekend include 24 hour a day broadcasting until Tuesday morning. Hence today's schedule is:

 6.00 Tony Allan

 9.00 Joost de Draaier

12.00 Jan Van Veen (Super Top 50 and Toekomstmuziek)

 16.00 Tony Allan

 18.00 Alan West

 21.00 Stevi Merike

 24.00 Martin Kayne

 3.00 - 6.00 Stevi Merike

Today marks the start of RNI's news and weather service, with news in Dutch at the top of each hour from 7.00 to 16.00, then a news round up at 18.00. The Dutch newsreader is Hans ten Hooge. News in English starts at 17.00 with Stevi Merike reading (also at 18.00), Tony Allan at 19.00, when Hans ten Hooge also did sports news in Dutch, and Tony again at 20.00, 21.00 and 22.30 and there are news round ups in both Dutch and English at 24.00 and 2.00.

Alan West announces that there will be programme changes from 1 May 1971. Because of the introduction of the news service, the "Man of Action" theme was played on the half hour from 16.30 to 21.30 and from 23.30 onwards.

Sunday 11 April 1971

Programmes today are:

 6.00 Tony Allan

 9.00 Joost de Draaier

 12.00 Ferry Maat

15.00 Tony Allan (Super Hit 50)

 18.00 Alan West

 21.00 Stevi Merike

The new LP by Shocking Blue is featured heavily in the Dutch service. New records on board this week by Aretha Franklin, Severine, James Brown, Big Mouth, Redbone and Dion.

Monday 12 April 1971

There is a promo today for an RNI mobile discotheque, which is to operate in Holland. Appearing this Saturday will be Tony Allan and Jan Van Veen. More interviews in the Alan West show and all of the English DJs keep referring to a new Dj called Timothy Greasefinger. Lots of mentions too for Mark Wesley when the Djs play his "Music....RNI" production to take them up to the news.

More new records featured today from Johnny Cash, Fleetwood Mac and Marvin Welch and Farrar.

Tuesday 13 April 1971

News in English today read by Stevi Merike from 17.00 to 20.00 and thereafter by Martin Kayne. "Man of action" is now played in the Dutch service after the news at the start of each programme, whilst in the English programmes it is now played more regularly on the half hour.

More new records featured today - Glass House, Lynn Anderson, Flaming Ember and Mama Cass Elliot.

Wednesday 14 April 1971

No longer do the DJs say "Thank you to X for the news". Now it's just "Thank you to our news department" or "Thank you to announcer one". Tony Allan and Stevi Merike have been helping the Dutch crew paint the side of the Mebo 2 today and Stevi reads news from 17.00 to 19.00 and Tony from 20.00 onwards. Slightly less news at 18.00 after the ten minute long bulletin yesterday.

Not all of RNI's music is on record - some music, for example "Let my life be your love song" by Arrival, is on cassette.

A mystery record was played on the Alan West show and Alan asks listeners to write in if they can identify it. Alan also continues to talk about forthcoming programme changes due to start from 1 May. Alan uses Isaac Hayes' "You've lost that lovin' feeling" as his backing music today.

Thursday 15 April 1971

Today's tender takes off Tony Allan and Martin Kayne and brings back Crispian St John and Dave Rogers. Today's programmes are:

 6.00 Tony Allan

 9.00 Jan Van Veen

 12.00 Joost de Draaier

 14.00 Ferry Maat

 16.00 Crispian St John

 18.00 Alan West

 21.00 Stevi Merike

 24.00 - 2.00 Dave Rogers

News today is read by Stevi Merike at 17.00 and 18.00 and thereafter by Dave Rogers, though their names were not mentioned. Mystery record still being played by Alan West and "Man of action" is now played on most half hours in the English programmes.

Friday 16 April 1971

Alan West takes over on the 6.00 to 9.00 show now that Tony Allan is on shore leave. Ferry Maat interviews Dave Rogers on his programme and Dave describes himself as a "floating disc jockey". News is read today by Dave Rogers at 17.00 and 18.00 and thereafter by Crispian St John.

Medium wave transmitter goes off the air for a short period at 19.10, but returns quickly. "Man of action" now played at the start of each programme in the Dutch service.
