The RNI memories of Michael Downing for this period

Saturday 24 July 1971

It is announced that RNI will start its World Service on the 31 and 49 metre band transmitters tomorrow at 7.00, but it will only broadcast on Sundays from 7.00 to 15.00, when the shortwave transmitters will rejoin the medium wave and FM transmitters for the Super Hit 50 programme. The Dutch service Super Top 50 show is at 12.00 today as usual with Joost de Draaier and is followed at 15.00 by Toekomstmuziek, also with Joost.

The International service today is:

 16.00 Mike Ross

 18.00 Alan West

 20.00 Crispian St John

 22.00 Mark Stuart

 24.00 - 3.00 Dave Rogers

There are new jingles for before the news (featuring Mark Stuart) and after the news (featuring Alan West). Alan West has also made a jingle to be played before news of the Apollo 15 space mission, which blasts off Monday. There is also a new hitback jingle made by Crispian St John. Dave Rogers, Mike Ross and Alan West read the news.

There was a trip to the Mebo 2 today organised by one of the UK free radio organisations, so there were a lot of RNI fans on the Mebo 2 this afternoon.

Two mobile discotheques today - one in the afternoon with Peter Holland and Stevi Merike and one in the evening with Ferry Maat and Stevi Merike.

Sunday 25 July 1971

The World Service starts at 7.00 on the two shortwave transmitters as expected with Mike Ross at 7.00, followed by Alan West at 9.00, then an edition of Nordsee goes DX, which features the Caroline/Atlanta story from 1964. Crispian St John then finishes off leading up to the International service starting at 15.00, with the following programmes:

15.00 Alan West (Super Hit 50)

 18.00 Crispian St John (Reviews)

 19.30 Mark Stuart (LP Show)

 21.00 Crispian St John

 23.00 Mike Ross

 24.00 - 3.00 Dave Rogers

Alan West had a terrible rush to fit everything in on the Top 50 show, so the hitpicks of Ferry Maat, Jan Van Veen, Stevi Merike, Mark Stuart, Mike Ross, Leo van der Goot and Kurt the engineer were not played. Not a lot of new records on board this week, so the review programme is mainly records from two or three weeks ago. Dave Rogers and Mike Ross read the news.

A mobile discotheque today features Ferry Maat and Stevi Merike.

Monday 26 July 1971

RNI starts news coverage on Apollo 15 at approximately ten to and twenty past each hour, read by Mike Ross, Alan West and Crispian St John.

New mobile discotheques are announced for the coming week featuring Mike Ross, but he will not be appearing as Alan West is going off the boat this week instead of Mike.

The programme schedule for the International service is the same as on Saturday and regular news is read by Dave Rogers.

After July 26th, Michael was on vacation and out of RNI's reception area.
