De hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer deze week is The year of decision van The Three Degrees. Een zeer toepasselijke titel, slechts drie maanden voordat het geluid van RNI zou verstommen. De hekkesluiter deze week is een heel oud plaatje, wederom uitgebracht op een verzamel LP, luister maar naar de reklame na Bill Haley in de Top 50. Ivan Heijlen stoot deze week door naar nummer 1 met z’n Boerendochtere. Een favoriete plaat bij de hardlopers staat op nummer 34, Run to the sunshine van Leo Unger. Een bijzondere plaat op nummer 1 in de Troef 20 deze week, I love you van Larry Cotton. Gestoken in een hoes met grote rode lippen. Het verhaal gaat dat Pat Paaij zorg droeg voor het “gezucht” op deze plaat. Het buitengaats team heeft een hele mooie kanskaart uitgezocht deze week. Helaas was Jim Croce in September het jaar ervoor bij een vliegtuigongeluk om het leven gekomen.

The RNI memories of Michael Downing for this period

On 1 June 1974 RNI had just three months to go, although we did not know the end date yet. But the impending end didn’t stop them recruiting a new DJ to replace Graham Gill, who had left the station in May 1974 to rejoin Radio Caroline. The new DJ was Jason Wolfe, who had worked with Don Allen some years earlier on Radio Caroline North. Jason joined the station at the very end of May 1974 and was on board in his first week with Don Allen and Robin Banks.

Don Allen presented the Toppers 20 on Friday 31 May 1974 from 20.00 to 22.00. This chart was loosely based on the UK Top 20, but this week’s chart included Robert Knight’s “Better get ready for love” at no. 7 and the Philadelphia Flyers’ “Hot line” at no. 20, neither of which were UK Top 50 hits. The International Service Smash Play was “Good time Fanny” by Angel , which was also not a hit in the UK.

On the Dutch Service, Gerard Smit was on board the Mebo 2 in the first week of June 1974 and presented Buitengaats from 18.00 to 20.00. Tony Berk was on holiday and his weekday programme from 12.00 to 14.00 was presented in his absence by Marc van Amstel, although Tony had recorded sufficient new editions of “Prijs Bewust” to be used at 13.00 during his holiday.

Marc van Amstel was the main stand in DJ in this period. In the early part of June 1974, he also deputised for Leo van der Goot on “Driemaster” for a while whilst Leo was away. I always associate Leo with the Troef 20, but I see from the lists that I made at the time that the last Troef 20 programme that he presented was on 25 May 1974. On 1 June 1974, the Troef 20 was presented by Marc van Amstel, who was obviously very busy at the beginning of June 1974. The Super Top 50 show on 1 June 1974 was hosted, as usual, by Ferry Maat.
