The RNI memories of Michael Downing for this week in 1974

The week leading up to Saturday 23 March 1974 had seen the last significant change in the DJ line up of the Dutch service, with the departure of Hans ten Hooge. Hans had been with RNI since April 1971 and was, in March 1974, the second longest serving DJ on RNI after Ferry Maat. Hans' departure meant that Leo van der Goot was now the second longest serving DJ, with Tony Berk in third place. RNI took on a number of new Dutch newsreaders in 1974 to replace Hans ten Hooge and Hans Molenaar, who had left in January 1974. Herman de Bruin was the replacement for Hans Molenaar and Peter Jager and Gerard Reitsma joined in the spring, effectively replacing Hans ten Hooge and Marc van Amstel, as Marc moved onto land at that time as relief DJ when others were on holiday. The newsreading team was completed by Eric Post and Gerard Smit, who became the Buitengaats team for the final months of RNI's life.

Leo van der Goot was by now the only regular host of Driemaster, which had the Troef 20 in its Saturday edition. Leo presented the Troef 20 on Saturday 23 March 1974 and Ferry Maat presented the Super Top 50 as usual.

On the International service, the team was now Brian McKenzie, Don Allen, Graham Gill, Robin Banks and Roger Kent, with Rob Eden presenting a Contemporary Music programme early on a Monday morning and the Skyline programme, from 4.00 to 6.00 most mornings being mainly a continuous music show, but with pre-recorded links by Louise Quirk. Skyline was not broadcast on Monday morning, as RNI closed its transmitters for a couple of hours for maintenance work each week.

The week commencing Saturday 23 March 1974 had the New Seekers with "I get a little sentimental over you" at no.1 on the Toppers 20 chart and Deep Purple as the highest new entry at no. 16 with "Might just take your life". The Smash Play was "The Lord's Prayer" by Sister Janet Mead and the Top 10 LPs, not in any particular order, included albums by Deep Purple, Wilson Pickett, Badfinger, Mick Ronson, Gallagher and Lyle, Skin Alley and the Incredible String Band. The music selection on RNI in March 1974 was, therefore, as varied as it had always been. The Toppers 20 on Friday 22 March 1974 was presented by Don Allen.
