Fat Mama van Long Tall Ernie en de Shakers uit Arnhem. Op 30 komt de mooie
Harlem Song van de Sweepers binnen. Op 36 komt een vroege karnavalsplaat van
Sandra en Andres binnen : Dzjing boem. Op 48 verschijnt Henk Elsink voor ’t
eerst in de Top 50 met Johanna, toch wel onvoorstelbaar dat zulke platen de
Top 50 toen haalden. De Troef 20 wordt aangevoerd door Seals and Crofts met
het mooie We may never pass this way again. Verder een troef 20 met een
aantal mooie plaatjes van Gladys Knight, Cockney Rebel, Harold Melvin,

The RNI memories
of Michael Downing for this period Saturday 24 November 1973 Excluding the Treiterschijf
and the Smash Play, the records that I have heard most on RNI over the week
from 17 to 23 November 1973 have been:
Ted Bouwens
interviews Long Tall Ernie and the Shakers on his programme
today. There is a football match between the RNI DJs and an artists’ team
this afternoon. The artists’ team includes Ben Cramer, the Lowland Trio and
the Cocktail Trio and DJs playing are Ted Bouwens,
Tony Berk, Leo van der Goot, Ferry Maat and Piet Romer. After four calm days on the North Sea there
is a Force 10 storm today, which causes chaos at the start of this evening’s
International service programmes. Things start well
enough with the Smash Play – “Little Girl” by Beckett – but this stops
towards the end, to be followed by a period of silence, then an announcement
and programme run down by Don Allen, followed by “I
love you love me love” first played too slow and then too fast, then the
Smash Play jingle too fast, then the Smash Play itself too fast, although it
had got back to the right speed by the end of the record. Mike Ross then
announces the start of the International service and things return to normal
with….the Gary Glitter record again. Programmes
are: 20.00 Don Allen (?) 20.10 Mike Ross 22.00 Don Allen (Country’n’Western
Jamboree) 24.00 Don Allen 1.00 Graham Gill 4.00 – 7.00 Don
Allen Don Allen plays complete LP sides in the Country’n’Western Jamboree as the sea is so rough. Mike
Ross says that the rough weather might mean that they have to stop news
broadcasts, but they do continue throughout the evening. Mike Ross and Graham
Gill have made promos for the six special International service weekly shows.
Sunday 25 November 1973 There is a very weak signal from RNI in
the morning. International service programmes are: 20.00 Mike Ross (Hitback
Show) 22.00 Graham Gill (Request Show) 24.00 Don Allen 2.00 – 4.00 Rob Eden (Contemporary Music) The winner of the hitback
competition is, for the first time this evening, Dorothy Stigwood,
one of RNI’s most regular letter writing listeners. The sea is calmer this
evening. Monday 26 November 1973 Branding goes back to being non-stop
music today, following the announcements made every few records at the end of
last week. Tonight’s programmes: 20.00 Mike Ross 22.00 Graham Gill 1.00 Don Allen 4.00 – 6.00 Skyline Mike Ross says that Rob Eden and Robin
Banks have gone to Jamaica on holiday. The medium wave signal is spoiled by
tests from another station after 23.30. Tuesday 27 November 1973 Hans Molenaar
goes off on shore leave and Marc van Amstel
returns. Marc presents Buitengaats this evening. A
lot of new records arrive with the tender today. Wednesday 28 November 1973 Dutch service news is read today by Marc
van Amstel and Gerard Smit. Thursday 29 November 1973 The sea is very rough again today and the
DJs are wondering whether there will be a tender tomorrow. Friday 30 November 1973 There is a tender today and it takes off
Mike Ross, Don Allen and Gerard Smit and brings
back Brian McKenzie, Robin Banks and Hans ten Hooge.
Dutch news is read during the day by Gerard Smit,
then Marc van Amstel and then Hans ten Hooge. The International service programmes
tonight are: 20.00 Graham Gill (Top 30) 22.00 Brian McKenzie (Rock’n’roll
Special) 24.00 Robin Banks 2.00 Graham Gill 4.00 – 6.00 Brian McKenzie Brian McKenzie had asked listeners to the
Rock’n’roll Special to send in details of their
most valuable records a couple of weeks ago, but has decided not to read
these letters out on the air as he thinks that it could encourage theft. Quite a few new records played during the
