The RNI memories of Michael Downing for this period

Ferry Maat had just gone on holiday, so the Super Top 50 programme on 22 September 1973 was presented by Tony Berk. The Troef 20 was broadcast on Saturday afternoon in Driemaster, which was still live from the Mebo 2 in September 1973. On 22 September 1973 the programme was hosted by Dick de Graaf.

September 1973 was a very stable month for RNI with no DJ changes, although, of course the threat of the Dutch Anti-Zeezenderwet continued to hang over the offshore stations. The International service largely ignored it, however, and it was very much “business as usual”. The International service Top 30 was still broadcast from 20.00 to 22.00 on Friday evening and the show was presented by Graham Gill on Friday 21 September 1973. Rod Stewart was at no.1 with “Oh no not my baby”, the Smash Play for the week was “Thinking” By Roger Daltrey and the LP of the Week was “These foolish things” by Bryan Ferry. The Top 30 had begun to resemble the British Top 30 in the summer of 1973, but by 21 September there were eight records in it that did not make the official British Top 50 and these were:

7. Equals – Honeybee

11. Long John Baldry and Liza Strike – She

16. Judge Dread – Oh she is a big girl now

17. Red Herring – I’m a gambler

19 Eagles – Tequila Sunrise

22. Shirley Bassey – Make the world a little younger

28. Fandango – High class girl

29. Pioneers – Bad to be good

The record by Red Herring had been a hit in Holland in 1969 under the artist name Lace, but it was the same recording
