The RNI memories of Michael Downing for this week in August 1973

The International service of RNI had lost Arnold Layne in July 1973 and was therefore one DJ short, so Rob Eden returned to the Mebo 2 for a while in August, before the new DJ joined. The new DJ turned out to be a familiar voice under a new name. Robin Banks had broadcast under the name of Robin Adcroft on Radio Caroline earlier in 1973.

The Dutch service had the same DJ team throughout August 1973, with the weekday schedule being:

6.00 Buitengaats (Marc van Amstel, Gerard Smit or Hans Molenaar)

 9.00 Branding (Non-stop)

 10.00 Peter Hoilland

 12.00 Tony Berk

 14.00 Ferry Maat

16.00 Driemaster (Leo van der Goot and Dick de Graaf on alternate weeks)

 18.00 - 20.00 Nico Steenbergen

On Monday evening Hans Molenaar presented a programme of music from no later than 1965 called "65 Min" from 19.00 to 20.00.

The Super Top 50 show, as always from 12.00 to 15.00 on Saturday, was presented by Ferry Maat on 25 August 1973 and the Troef 20, broadcast in Driemaster on Saturday, was hosted by Leo van der Goot, who was on board the Mebo 2 and presenting Driemaster that week.

The International Top 30 on Friday 24 August 1973, from 20.00 to 22.00, was hosted by Graham Gill and had "Rising Sun" by Medicine Head at number 1. There was only one new entry in the Top 30 - "Young love" by Donny Osmond at number 13 - although there were a few big movements within the chart, such as "Smarty Pants" by First Choice moving from number 15 to number 4 and "You can do magic" by Limmie and the Family Cooking falling from number 2 to number 15, The Smash Play for the week was "Tequila Sunrise" by the Eagles. Note from Ben : Now I know when I recorded this aircheck from FM.

The Hitback show - from 20.00 to 22.00 on Sundays - was presented by Mike and Sheila Ross on 26 August 1973, as was usually the case in this part of 1973. Sheila Ross was therefore one of only three female DJs on the International service of RNI - the others were Jane Valentine and Louise Quirk - but I don't think she ever presented a programme on her own and she was usually only featured in the Hitback Show.
