The RNI memories of Michael Downing for April 1973

There is a good chance that the Super Top 50 programme of 7 April 1973, presented as usual by Ferry Maat, was the most listened to edition, because if you wanted to listen to offshore radio on that Saturday, RNI was your only choice. On Monday 2 April 1973 one of the worst storms that the North Sea had seen resulted in the Norderney breaking its anchor chain and drifting onto the beach, which meant that Radio Veronica was off the air from that evening through to Wednesday 11 April, when it returned, broadcasting temporarily from the Mi Amigo. The Mi Amigo itself had been silent since the morning of Monday 26 March. Although the storm was so violent that it put the Mebo 2 off the air for a few hours, RNI returned to the air in the afternoon of Tuesday 3 April and, for almost the next 8 days, it was the only offshore radio station broadcasting in the North Sea. It was a particularly good time for Nederpop in the Top 50, with Earth & Fire, the Dizzy Man’s Band, Focus, Shocking Blue, Mouth & MacNeal, Amsterdam, Kayak, the Sandy Coast, Sandra & Andres, Long Tall Ernie & the Shakers, Bolland & Bolland, the Buffoons and the Walkers all making an appearance.

The weekend of 7 and 8 April 1973 was also notable for being the last weekend that RNI broadcast its Playlist programme, which was superseded the following week by the Troef 20. Dick de Graaf presented the final Playlist show in Sunday afternoon’s Driemaster. The final playlist included records that were played a lot on RNI, such as “They never told us” by Ed Welch, “Goodbye Guitar Man” by Cherry Van Gelder Smith, “Rainbow Man” by Looking Glass and “Morgen word het beter” by Gerard Cox, none of which even made the Tipparade on Veronica. Also on the Playlist was “Tu te reconnaitras” by Anne-Marie David, which had been played a lot by RNI in the week leading up to Saturday 7 April 1973, so it was well known to RNI listeners when it won the Eurovision Song Contest on that day.

On the International service, Ian Anderson presented the International Top 30 show from 20.00 to 22.00 on Friday 6 April 1973. Gilbert O’Sullivan was at nr.1 with “Get down” and, as was usual by now, this chart was based strongly on the official British chart, although there were a few records that were not British hits. These included  Bitter Bad” by Melanie at nr. 11, “Brown baby” by Billy Paul at nr. 26, “The night the lights went out in Georgia” by Vicki Lawrence at nr. 28 and “Everyday” by Don McLean at nr. 29.
