The RNI memories of Michael Downing for March 1973

In mid-March 1973 RNI had two DJ changes. On the Dutch service, Alfred Lagarde left and was replaced on Driemaster by Dick de Graaf. This meant that the weekday programme schedule was now:

6.00 Buitengaats (live from the Mebo 2 with either Gerard Smit or Marc van Amstel)

 9.00 Branding

 10.00 Peter Holland

 12.00 Tony Berk

 14.00 Ferry Maat

16.00 Driemaster (live from the Mebo 2 with either Leo van der Goot or Dick de Graaf)

 18.00 - 20.00 Nico Steenbergen

On the International service, Graham Gill joined, having been with Radio Caroline for a few weeks. Graham joined a team that consisted of Brian McKenzie, Don Allen, Mike Ross, Arnold Layne and Ian Anderson. Graham replaced Steve King, who had only had one tour of duty on the Mebo 2 and had suffered from seasickness.

The International service Top 30, presented by Mike Ross on Friday 23 March 1973, had "20th Century Boy" by T Rex at no. 1 and five records which climbed into the Top 10, by the Detroit Emeralds at no. 4, White Plains at no. 5, Dawn at no. 6, Miki Anthony at no. 7 and Roxy Music at no. 8. All of these were UK Top 30 hits, but there were a lot of records lower down the chart which were not UK hits, including Deep Purple, Earth and Fire, Georgie Fame and Alan Price, Clarence Carter, Edward Bear, Vicki Lawrence, Sutherland Brothers and Quiver, Melanie and 10CC. So the music on RNI's International service remained a mix of UK hits and non-hits in March 1973 and the station as a whole was in good form.

In the period January to March 1973 there had been three radio stations broadcasting from the North Sea, but Radio Caroline suffered a breakdown at about 7.30 on Monday 26 March 1973 and did not return to the air, which left Radio Veronica and RNI as the only stations broadcasting for the rest of the week.
