The RNI memories of Michael Downing for March 1973

The Mebo 2 was back in position by Saturday 3 March 1973, following the anchor chain break a week earlier, so it was back to business as usual.

The weekday Dutch service schedule by this time was:

6.00 Buitengaats (Gerard Smit or Marc van Amstel, live from the Mebo 2)

 9.00 Non-stop

 10.00 Peter Holland

 12.00 Tony Berk

 14.00 Ferry Maat

16.00 Driemaster (Leo van der Goot or Alfred Lagarde, live from the Mebo 2)

 18.00 - 20.00 Nico Steenbergen

Hans ten Hooge, Hans Molenaar and Dick de Graaf were also with RNI at the beginning of March 1973, mainly as newsreaders.

The Dutch service Playlist, which consisted of the Treiterschijf, the DJ Kanskaarten and a number of new records, was broadcast in the Sunday edition of Driemaster. There were also programmes from Vader Abraham and Andre van Duin on Sunday.

On the International service, the DJ team was Mike Ross, Brian McKenzie, Don Allen, Arnold Layne, Steve King and Ian Anderson. Ian Anderson had presented the International Top 30 show for the first time on Friday 2 March 1973. "Cindy Incidentally" by the Faces was the no. 1 for the week, but the two highest new entries were by Dutch acts. "Hocus Pocus" by Focus was new at no. 14 and was a hit in the UK at the time. "Maybe Tomorrow Maybe Tonight" by Earth and Fire was very much the most important new record on the offshore stations in the early spring of 1973 and entered the International Top 30 at no. 16 on 2 March 1973, although it was not a UK hit. The Top 30 was mainly based on the official UK chart, although there were a few records between 20 and 30 which didn't make the UK chart, including those by Katrina ("Don't stick stickers") and Georgie Fame and Alan Price ("Don't hit me when I'm down”).
